Paranormal Activity 1 Case Study: Plot

Paranormal Activity is a horror series which focuses on demonic/ spiritual possession and it's effects on family life- this is the route I want to take for my own horror film which is why I am researching more about the series, the first film in particular.

A young couple, Katie and Micah move into a new house and as Katie worries that an evil prescene (which haunted her in her childhood) is returned, Micah sets up a camera in their bedroom to record any paranormal activity. Ultimately Katie becomes possessed by the demon and kills Micah.

I would like my plot to have more of a backstory and enigma, as this film- while effective in scaring an audience, it features nothing other than the two characters hearing noises or seeing things on the recordings which isn't always enough to keep the audience entertained.

Paranormal Activity 1

I've decided to research more into Paranormal Activity 1 as I recently watched it and it is a similar type of film as I would like mine to be.

I'm going to look into: the plot, the poster and the characters.

Horror Film Posters

I've found a lot of popular horror film posters so that I can see conventions with the genre. 

• I found that all of the titles gave the impression of a horror film except for 'Smiley' which is a contrast to typical horror titles as it doesn't sound negative or sinister.

• All of the posters are dark- black and greys and some have a pop of colour which is usually red, except for The Exorcist which is purple and Poltergeist is all blue.

• All of the posters look generally unpleasant and some of the pictures are actually quite scary.

• I think the font is also important- a lot of the posters have the same fonts- about 9 of them have this kind of font and the rest have their own individual font which can relate to the title/film- for example Scream in which the M is shaped like a knife.
